Sonapani Film Festival

Post by parambyte »

Gurpal has been organizing this festival for nearly six years at sonapani and the family who has made this very comfortable and simple guest house have over time become active supporters of independent cinema apart from hosting this festival. the festival over time has brought a number of people together as cinephilles and film collaborators/makers too. If anyone has the time, do attend! each year there are three film makers, a senior, mid career and new filmmaker. its a good balance of practitioners from commercial, independent, fiction and non fiction. its a very small group and many intimate open discussions, interactions in a non formal yet comprehensive way.

Three filmmakers share some of their works with a small group of 25 to 30 participants.... there is wonderful cinema, good food, bonhomie, mountain views and fresh air and crackling bonfires. This time the festival has films mostly on music, and is being curated and presented by Satchit Puranik.

The filmmakers are:
NANDAN KUDHYADI:
Nandan has more than sixty-five documentaries to his credit on varied subjects. Several of them have won top national awards, and have been screened at various international film festivals like Cinema du Reel, Tokyo, Brussels, Vancouver, Pusan, Hawaii, Karlovy Vary and others.
His much talked about film RASAYATRA(1994, 35 mm, 47 minutes) has won the Golden Lotus National Award for the Best Non-feature Film of the year 1995, for ‘its sensitive and imaginative transposition of music, into a dignified cinematic expression'. ... and the Jury's Special Mention at the Brussels festival. It was chosen for the NHK Asian Film Festival at Tokyo, and for the INDOMANIA Festival at Paris. It has traveled all over the world as part of the NETPAC Asian Discovery Selection -1996.

Nandan Kudhyadi graduated in Fine Arts before specializing in film direction at the Film & Television Institute of India at Pune. He has worked with celebrated international filmmakers like Michelangelo Antonioni and Krzysztof Zanussi, apart from Mani Kaul and Ketan Mehta.

His latest film is ‘RAAG PRAYAAG - Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar's Confluence of Music'

His works include, among others:

-The Genius of Srinivasa Ramanujan (2012)

-Looking At Myslef (Documentary on the famous Hindi author Bhisham Sahni)

-Pathfinders (A documentary series on well known crusaders -

Yousuf is an independent filmmaker and researcher based in New Delhi. After finishing his masters in Mass Communication at Jamia Millia's AJK Mass Communication Research Centre, he started his career in educational television, co-directing the science series Turning Point for Doordarshan. He moved on to produce documentaries on a variety of subjects, some of his prominent films being Inside Ladakh, Basant, A Life in Science-Yashpal, and the Train to Heaven which have been shown at numerous film festivals, academic venues and on TV channels. Besides films and television, Yousuf also worked for Encyclopedia Britannica (India) as the Arts Editor. He has been a Sarai Fellow (in 2004), the Asia Fellow (in 2005-06) and the Margaret Beveridge Senior Research Fellow (at J.B.Media Resource Centre, Jamia Millia, New Delhi, in 2009).

Yousuf's most recent work is a feature length documentary film Khayal Darpan about the state of classical music in Pakistan. It has been shown at numerous international film festivals in Hong Kong, France, United States, Nepal, Pakistan and others. Yousuf's interest in the popular devotional art of Indian Muslims and his extensive collection of such art work brings him to the Tasveer Ghar, a digital archive of India's popular visual art. He recently wrote and published his new illustrated book Muslim Devotional Art in India (Routledge, 2012) which explores the history of Islamic poster art in India. Through much of his recent work, Yousuf tries to document and present the pluralistic and shared cultural traditions, music and arts in India. He continues to work on several new documentary films as well as writing projects.
